Other Causes of Hair Loss

Aside from lifestyle factors and male pattern baldness, there can be other causes of hair loss.  Certain immunological disorders such as Lyme disease or lupus can be the cause of major shedding and balding. Endocrine disorders like Addison's disease or   hypo and hyperthyroidism can all create patchy type of hair loss as well.

Even seemingly unrelated conditions, like kidney disease can create hair loss too, for apparently different reasons.

Others causes can include:

Parasites

Ringworm, which isn't a real worm per se,   is actually a type of fungal infection that can infest the scalp and cause severe hair loss. Caused by the tinea capatis, the fungus can grow out of hand until patches of hair fall out in clumps. A proper diagnosis can stop this from occurring.  After treatment, the hair should begin to grow normally once again.

Fungus

Certain types of infections and fungal growths can undoubtedly cause hair to shed and fall out excessively. For instance, a condition known as Piedra (Trichomycosis Nodularis) is caused when the hair is attacked by the fungus.   The hair strands are often the worse hit, as hard round nodules develop of the fibers. When left untreated, this fungus can spread causing hair to fall off all over the body.  Treatment often involves shaving the infected area and treating the skin with topical ointments.

Inflammation

An acne-like scalp condition called folliculitis can create an infection at the base of the hair follicles.  The infection is cause by an inflammation of the follicles.  When it progresses, it can permanently harm the hair follicle.  The hair falls out leaving patchy bald areas that are hard to treat.

Some forms of folliculitis can be caused by the use of products that clog the pores of the scalp but most are brought on by a bacterial infection, like staph.
