Polysorbate 80

Polysorbate 80 was made famous in the 1980's as an ingredient in the Helsinki Formula for hair loss. It is also an FDA approved surfactant (something to clean a surface) and is approved as a food additive. It causes water and oils or fats to mix, and is not toxic – it is usually found in mayonnaise and salad dressings.

Polysorbate 80 Benefits for Hair Loss

Polysorbate 80 is said to help remove the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is known to prevent hair follicles from growing because it interrupts their growing cycle. There is also some evidence that polysorbate 80 can be a part of a hair loss treatment because of its emulsifying properties. Products for hair loss that have polysorbate 80 as an ingredient usually claim that it can unclog hair follicles. If hair follicles are clogged and unhealthy than they are not in the proper state to grow hair.

Polysorbate 80 Side Effects

You should not use polysorbate 80 if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, if you have any blood disease or have high blood pressure or heart disease. Before using polysorbate 80 as a hair loss treatment you should consult with your doctor just to be safe.

Does Polysorbate 80 Work as a Hair Loss Treatment?

As stated above, polysorbate-80 is said to eliminate deposits of DHT and cholesterol from the scalp. It is a widespread additive in shampoo and it is also available to be purchased on its own, usually in an eight ounce bottle. It is recommended that you massage the polysorbate 80 liquid into your scalp and leave it on for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. You then shampoo your hair. There is no solid proof that it will grow hair.
